Première Université Régionale du Mali - Education Distance (Prem-U)

This initiative is to launch a partnership program with the Malian Ministry of Education and the University of Bamako, Mali, to create university extension community college-style programs around the country.  Vocational, teacher, and continuing education courses will be set up with initial courses ground based and the rest of the program done online in cooperation with local telecentres and internet cafes and by correspondence as needed.

The initial curriculum will include teacher training, computer maintenance, and a non-profit/ NGO management certification.  These were seen as critical needs based on country reports, future projection, and current crisis.

Working paper on the project.

University Profile

The University of Bamako has consulted Global PlanIt to oversee pilot study operations for Prem-U with partner leadership from the Malian director and the both local and international associations that would act as board of directors.  GPI’s Executive Director will serve on the Community College board with a GPI program manager assisting in country.  The ongoing program would be maintained by its connection to the university structure and in accordance with the Ministry of Education directives.  The idea of ‘community’ is very significant to the realization of this design because the strategy is to tie the community’s needs to appropriate resources in order to train skilled community members and develop sustainability in the private and public sector.
